Why Ireland

Why immigrate to Ireland?

Many people look at Ireland because it is an English-speaking country inside the European Union. A number of international technology, pharmaceutical, medical device and financial services companies run large operations there, so the work environment will feel familiar if you have worked for a multinational before. Most work routes start with a job offer, which makes Ireland a practical option if your skills are in demand with Irish employers.

Families weigh the longer view. After a qualifying period on an employment permit, you can move to Stamp 4 permission, which lets you work without a permit. Time lived in Ireland on most work and family permissions can later count towards citizenship by naturalisation, and Irish citizenship carries the rights of EU citizenship. When you hold the right permission, your spouse or partner and children can join you, and children can attend local schools.

Students consider Irish universities and colleges for recognised qualifications taught in English, and for the Third Level Graduate Programme, which lets eligible graduates stay on to look for work. Ireland has tightened several rules recently, including family reunification conditions, rising salary thresholds for employment permits and proposed changes to citizenship. It is worth checking your profile carefully before you commit time and money.

Pathways in detail

Critical Skills Employment Permit

This permit is for highly skilled people in occupations that Ireland has identified as being in short supply, such as many roles in ICT, engineering, science, healthcare and finance. It suits professionals with a relevant degree and a job offer for an occupation on the Critical Skills Occupations List. No labour market test is needed. It depends on the occupation, a job offer of a minimum duration, your qualifications and the salary offered, which must meet the threshold set for this permit.

NOTEThe occupation lists are reviewed regularly, and salary thresholds are rising in stages.

General Employment Permit

This permit covers a wide range of occupations, as long as the role is not on the Ineligible List of Occupations. Either you or your employer can apply. It suits people with a genuine job offer in a role that Irish employers find hard to fill. It typically depends on the employer first advertising the role to show that no suitable EEA candidate is available, the salary meeting the minimum set for this permit, rules on the make-up of the employer’s workforce, and your qualifications and experience matching the job.

NOTESome occupations are subject to quotas, which can fill and close during the year.

Hosting Agreement for researchers

Researchers can come to Ireland to carry out a research project with an accredited research organisation, such as a university or research institute, under a hosting agreement. This route does not need an employment permit. It suits postdoctoral researchers and other research professionals with an offer from an accredited organisation. It depends on the organisation’s accreditation, the hosting agreement itself and your qualifications for the project.
